The satellite IRIDIUM 171 (also known as Iridium Next SV171) is a communication and traffic monitoring spacecraft operated by IRIDS. Launched on January 11, 2019, from AFWTR SLC4E using the Falcon 9 launch vehicle, it has a design lifetime of 10 years with plans for an extended operation up to 15 years. The satellite is based on the EliteBus platform and has a configuration of ELiTeBus-1000. It measures 3.1 meters in length, 1.5 meters in diameter, and its span is 9.4 meters. With a dry mass of 700 kg and launch mass of 860 kg, it was manufactured by NGISGA. Equipped with L-band payload, Ka-band cross-links and downlinks, ADS-B payload, and an AIS-receiver (part of a constellation where 58 satellites carry this receiver), the satellite is powered by two deployable solar arrays and batteries. Its shape is described as a Half Hex Prism with two panels.
