Summary
IRIDIUM 164, also known as Iridium Next SV164, is a communication and traffic monitoring satellite operated by IRIDS (Iridium Communications Inc.). Launched on July 25, 2018, from AFWTR (Vandenberg Air Force Base) SLC-4E using a Falcon 9 launch vehicle, it features a BUS configuration known as EliteBus with the ELiTeBus-1000 model. The satellite measures 3.1 meters in length and has a diameter of 1.5 meters, spanning up to 9.4 meters when its solar arrays are deployed. It weighs approximately 700 kilograms dry and was launched with a mass of 860 kilograms. Equipped with L-band payload for communication services and Ka-band cross-links and downlinks for data transfer, it also includes an ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast) payload and an AIS-receiver for traffic monitoring purposes. The satellite is powered by two deployable solar arrays and batteries. Its expected lifetime was initially designed to be 10 years but planned to extend up to 15 years.
