Summary
The DAMPE satellite, also known as Wukong, was launched on December 17, 2015, from Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (JSC) using a Chang Zheng 2D launch vehicle. It has dimensions of 2 meters in length and 1.5 meters in diameter with a span of 4 meters when its solar arrays are deployed. The satellite weighs 1860 kg at launch and is designed for astronomy and particle research purposes, manufactured by DFHZ on behalf of CAS (Chinese Academy of Sciences). DAMPE is equipped with scientific instruments including a Si-Pin array, plastic scintillation hodoscope array, BGO calorimeter, neutron detector, and a payload data management system. It uses two deployable solar arrays for power generation along with batteries to ensure continuous operation. The satellite has an expected lifetime of 3 years, featuring a box-shaped body with two panoramic panels and an area-to-mass ratio (RCS) of 1.582 square meters per kilogram.
