Summary
The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), also known by its NORAD ID 36395 and OBJECT_ID 2010-005A, is a solar observatory satellite launched on February 11, 2010, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's SLC41 using an Atlas V 401 launch vehicle. The spacecraft measures 4.5 meters in length and has a diameter of 2.2 meters with a span of 6.5 meters. It was designed for a five-year mission but has fuel reserves to extend its operation up to ten years. SDO weighs 3,100 kilograms at launch and 1,650 kilograms dry mass. Equipped with the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI), Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), and EUV Variability Experiment (EVE) instruments, it provides high-resolution images of the Sun to study solar activity and variability. The satellite is powered by two deployable fixed solar arrays and batteries and was manufactured by GSFC for the same organization's mission purpose.
