Summary
DEEP SPACE 1 (DS1) was a technology experiment and asteroid & comet flyby probe satellite launched by JPL on October 24, 1998, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station using the Delta 7326-9.5 launch vehicle. The spacecraft measured 2.1 meters in length, had a diameter of 1.7 meters, and spanned 11.5 meters when its solar arrays were deployed. It had a dry mass of 374 kilograms and launched with a mass of 475 kilograms. DS1 was equipped with the MICAS, PEPE, and SCARLETT 2 equipment and powered by two deployable solar arrays and batteries. The satellite's propulsion system included one NSTAR ion thruster for its mission purposes.
