Summary
COSMOS 1640, also known as Kosmos-1640, is a military communication satellite launched by GUKOS (Ministry of Defence) on March 21, 1985, from PLMSC LC132/2 using the Kosmos 11K65M launch vehicle. The spacecraft has dimensions of 0.8 meters in length, diameter, and span with a dry mass of 60 kg. Its purpose was to serve military communication needs through its payload, Strela-1M Blok 37 No. 6. Equipped with solar cells and batteries for power supply, COSMOS 1640 operated for approximately six months after launch. It was manufactured by NPOPM (NPO Mashinostroyeniya) and had a polyhedral shape with a radar cross-section of 0.6955 m².
